The world's first national park, Yellowstone, was created by an act of Congress in 1872. Today, the national park system includes over 400 units (58 national parks), over 84 million acres of land, and hosts over 300 million visitors per year. Join Active Minds as we tell the story of the development of our national parks system and highlight some of the more notable parks and their stories.

The Roots of Rock 'n' Roll
Emerging as a powerful force on the American music scene in the 1950's, Rock music has evolved with the decades and now includes many variations that sound pretty different from the likes of Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and the recently deceased Little Richard. Join Active Minds as we return to the roots of Rock 'n' Roll and trace its history and cultural impact through the years.

Inventor, artist, scientist, engineer, architect, philosopher, and more. Leonardo da Vinci was a true "Renaissance Man" and a clear creative genius. Join Active Minds as we review his life, work, and lasting impact.

Special Interest Activities 

​​​The Thornton Active Adult Center (AAC) offers a wide variety of special interest activities throughout the week on a drop-in basis. Feel free to stop in and check them out, there’s sure to be something that interests you.

Afternoon at the Movies: Join us on the second & fourth Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. for a free movie.  Please call 303-255-7850 for a list of movies and to sign up.
Bingo: The fun starts at 10 a.m. every Friday. Prizes will depend on the number of players. 25 cents a card, or five for $1. Please call 303-255-7850 for cancellation information.

Bocce Ball (Lawn Bowling):  Easy to learn, no experience necessary.  See Activity Guide for dates.

Bridge: Thursdays from 12-4:30 p.m. beginning in June.

Bunco: Join us for this dice game on the last Monday of each month from 1-3:00 p.m. beginning in June.

Poker: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. beginning in June.

Volleyball for Seniors: Drop-in Tuesday mornings at the Community Center on Eppinger and Gaylord, for open volleyball from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a good way to stay in shape for the fall league, tune up your volleyball skills and have fun with fellow volleyball players. There is no cost for seniors 55 and over during this time, however, anyone under 55 will need to pay the daily drop-in fee of 50 cents.

Wednesday Crafts: Preparing for their annual craft sale each December, and providing party favors and table center pieces for holiday events, this lively group keeps busy year round. Sponsored by the 55+ Organization, volunteers will lead you in simple, yet creative crafts. No experience needed. You will enjoy the fellowship of this special group as you put your hands and talents to work. The group meets Wednesdays except during Bingo days and summer months.

Wood Carvers: Come and join the "Thornton Wood Chippers" every Monday morning. Bring your wood and trusty knife. We've got friendly folks with whitlin' wisdom who will show you how to create a masterpiece. Mondays from 9-11 a.m.

Wood Shop/Pottery Studio: Mixed use space.  Pottery classes are currently held on Tuesday afternoons. You must be enrolled in a current pottery class to use the pottery room.  Wood Shop: Tools are available for use when classroom is not in use, a release form must be completed prior to use. Users must also have valid city of Thornton ID card.

Yesteryears Singers: This talented music group performs around the community in nursing homes, other senior centers and such. Most of their songs are from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, hence the name "Yesteryears Singers." Practices are held on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. except summer months.
