Thornton City Council Appoints New City Manager
Tansy Hayward to assume role in October
THORNTON, CO… The Thornton City Council unanimously passed a resolution to appoint Tansy Hayward as the next Thornton City Manager. This appointment comes after an extensive and competitive selection process, during which Hayward emerged as the top candidate. The contract was formally presented for approval at the August 27, 2024, Thornton City Council meeting. Hayward is expected to officially assume the role on October 21, 2024.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome Tansy Hayward as our new City Manager,” says Thornton Mayor Jan Kulmann. “Her vision and experience align with the direction we want to take as a community, and we look forward to working together to continue building on the city’s solid foundation."
“The city of Thornton is a beautiful place with an amazing quality of life,” Hayward says. “The collective efforts of the community, and current and prior elected officials and staff have not only built this exceptional community but have also positioned it for the future. I'm thrilled to make Thornton my new home and honored that I will have the opportunity to work in partnership to shape that future.”
Hayward has been with Raleigh, North Carolina since 2014, and has served as Deputy City Manager since 2021. Previously she worked for Tacoma, WA for eight years, with the last six years as the Assistant City Manager. She also had prior service with Des Moines, IA and Olathe, KS. Hayward has broad experience supervising Departments across her career and has led and assisted departments with major projects and decisions, including many that prepare for growth. Hayward is a native Kansan and holds her undergraduate and MPA degrees from the University of Kansas. She has 21-year-old twin daughters and two golden retrievers.
Mayor Kulmann further highlighted the importance of this transition, saying, "This is an exciting time for Thornton, and we are looking forward to tackling the challenges ahead and seizing the opportunities that will help us enhance the quality of life for all our residents."
During the council meeting, Thornton City Council Members all took the opportunity to express their gratitude to the candidates that took part in the selection process as well as their confidence in the selection of Hayward to lead the city.
