Thornton defines sustainability as finding ways to reduce our environmental impacts and to give back to the environment to ensure resources remain available in perpetuity while also creating a healthy, resilient, and adaptable organization and community. Thornton’s Sustainability Action Agenda addresses eight sustainability topics that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits to the organization and community. The city is already taking some action in each of these topic areas, but commits to elevating the level at which Thornton delivers services and programs, and to leading the way by taking sustainability action for city facilities and operations.
