Thornton Environmental Sustainability Master Plan

Building a Sustainable Future Together

Thornton’s 2025 Environmental Sustainability Master Plan is underway!

Latest News:

  • Visit the Environmental Sustainability Master Plan VIRTUAL Open House anytime during the month of October! This drop-in style virtual workshop will allow you to see project updates and provide your thoughts on preliminary Environmental Sustainability Master Plan strategies. Through a series of open house “stations”, we are looking for feedback on the resources needed for successful implementation of community- based actions.
  • We've spent the spring and summer out in the community collecting your feedback about what you want to see in the plan. Thank you to the residents who completed our community survey, stopped by our table at ThorntonFest, attended our Community Workshop in June, joined us at the July Farmer's Market, and visited our booth at DinoFest in August! We are busy incorporating your ideas and comments.

What is the Environmental Sustainability Master Plan?

Thornton is committed to addressing City-wide sustainability and ensuring a resilient future for our community. Our 2025 Environmental Sustainability Master Plan (ESMP) builds on our previous sustainability efforts, including the 2020 Thornton Comprehensive Plan, the Sustainability Action Agenda, Transportation and Mobility Master Plan, Utility Master Plan, and more. It will establish a clear, equitable, and actionable roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen our community’s resilience, and protect our natural environment.

This initiative is being driven by science, data, and your input. It will prioritize inclusivity, as we invite all residents—especially those from historically underrepresented communities—to have a voice in shaping our sustainable future.

Sustainability in Thornton

Thornton defines sustainability as finding ways to reduce our environmental impacts and to give back to the environment to ensure resources remain available in perpetuity while also creating a healthy, resilient, and adaptable organization and community. Thornton’s Sustainability Action Agenda addresses eight sustainability topics that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits to the organization and community. The city is already taking some action in each of these topic areas, but commits to elevating the level at which Thornton delivers services and programs, and to leading the way by taking sustainability action for city facilities and operations.

Thornton's Gold level recognition

The Colorado Green Business Network has recognized Thornton as a Gold Level Member for our work in reducing resource use and environmental management.

The City of Thornton is committed to sustainability and to helping our community conserve our most precious natural resources. The goal of the CGBN is to support businesses of all sectors and sizes throughout the state in increasing energy, water, and fuel efficiency, reducing waste, and implementing sector-specific sustainability best practices within their business operations.
