File of Life

The Thornton Fire Department is offering free File of Life kits. File of Life is a simple program that could quickly improve quality of care during emergencies. Individuals can write down and easily update their important medical information on the form and place it where it is easily accessible to first responders in a medical emergency – on the refrigerator door. A label is also provided that can be used to place on the front door so first responders can see it as they walk in the home.

The file also provides first responders with pertinent information about someone who cannot speak for himself or herself about medical conditions.

All New!! Smart 911

Smart911 is an optional service provided by the city that allows residents to create a secure Safety Profile with important information that may help first responders during an emergency. This service is a digital form of the “File of Life” program where critical life saving information is posted on residents’ refrigerators, but now it’s available to first responders before they arrive at your home.

Key Features

Household Data: Add names, photos, and descriptions of family members or pets.

Medical Details: List allergies, current medications, or special medical needs.

Location Notes: Share gate codes, door access, or hidden driveways.

How to Use It

Registration: Create your profile online or via the Smart911 mobile app on your phone, Download through the Apple store or Google Play.

Phone Verification: Link and verify your phone numbers via text or automated call.

Updates: Log in every 6 months to confirm your information is correct

The Thornton Fire Department in partnership with Health One Mountain Ridge hospital offers the Stepping On Fall Prevention Program. A community-based falls prevention program that shows participants how to reduce falls, increase confidence and maintain personal independence. The seven-week evidence based program covers strength and balance exercises, home fall hazards, getting about safely, footwear, medication management presentation by a pharmacist, vision expert visit and much more.

Stand-Alone/battery-operated audible alert smoke alarms are available to Thornton community members who meet need requirements. We will install stand-alone/battery-operated smoke alarms for individuals who are physically challenged and/or elderly and in need of assistance. All families who do not have working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms in their home and do not have means to obtain them should submit a request or call Fire Administration at 303-538-7602 for assistance or referral information. The Thornton Fire Department does not install, provide or replace hard-wired smoke alarms.

The American Red Cross may be able to provide additional smoke alarms for those that are deaf or hard of hearing. There are two types of smoke alarms that alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Both only work when paired with and activated by the sound of a traditional smoke alarm.

Bed Shaker – This device is placed below the pillow between the mattress and box-spring and physically alerts a sleeper and shakes them awake by vibrating. It’s connected to a device that resembles an alarm clock and displays a visual signal that flashes the word FIRE.
Strobe Light – This device flashes a special high intensity light that can wake a sleeping person.
