Council Member, Ward 2 (term expires 2029)
John was born in California & was given up for adoption as an infant. He then moved to Ohio where he was raised by his late adoptive parents Bill & Delores Alge. They helped raise him & through their small business as an auctioneer, John learned work ethic, love & respect for others & selfless service.
Upon graduation from Massillon Jackson High School, John enlisted in the United States Army, where he learned discipline & self sufficiency. John was assigned to Ft. Carson, which ultimately led him to return to Colorado upon retirement. After his enlistment period ended, John returned to Ohio & was hired by the United States Postal Service as a mail handler. It was then that John became a union member with the National Postal Mail Handlers Union Local 304. It was also where he met his future wife, Diane. John served thirty years with the USPS as a lifelong union member before retiring & then moving back to Colorado in 2018.
During his postal tenure, with the passing of the Hatch Act, John was able to be involved in Canton, OH politically. John began volunteering with Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns (Organizing for America) both in 2008 & 2012. OFA selected John to be a Neighborhood Team Leader in 2012, which was the launching point for John to not only learn community organizing but also helped him build the foundation to eventually run for & win public office. OFA also was instrumental in John’s leadership growth in guiding him to help his neighbors in need by assisting in local food banks, which John still volunteers to this day.
John over the last nearly two decades has helped candidates & electeds at all levels of government in both Ohio & Colorado win public office with both time & treasure. John will bring compassion & thoughtfulness to Thornton City Council, & he will work with his colleagues & city staff to help his neighbors & his community.
In 2023, John finally was successful in locating his birth mother Lucy Hardcastle & his birth family. It has brought fulfillment & closure to John & his birth family, who fully support him on his journey of service. One of John’s many birth cousins is also a fellow Thornton neighbor, Carol Nesbitt who resides in Ward 4. John & Diane reside in the Cherrylane neighborhood with their beautiful dog Rocky & their two cats brothers Darth & Storm.
John is a past member of both the Thornton Arts, Sciences & Humanities Council (TASHCO) & the Thornton Active Adult Advisory Board (TAAAB). John’s hobbies include travel, hiking, attending concerts & sporting events. John is a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Michigan Wolverines & the Denver Broncos.
