​The Environmental Services Team provides curbside trash and recycling collection services to over 31,000 homes in the City, as well as a number of other collection services for our citizens. The collection service program is operated as an enterprise fund, meaning that all costs associated with providing the various services are covered by user fees.

Thornton residents can use this service to get rid of clutter in the garage or basement, plan a do-it-yourself room remodel, clean up the yard or storage shed, get rid of recently replaced furniture or appliances, or for a rental property cleanup! This service is available by appointment only.  

The minimum fee is just $65 per collection for up to 6 cubic yards of stuff, which would approximately fill two standard pickup truck beds. The cost of service is placed on the next utility bill for payment. Got more junk? More than two full pickup loads = $109 or more.  

What is eligible?  Furniture, appliances, mattresses/box springs, hot water heaters, fence panels, branches, remodeling debris, yard waste, etc.

What is NOT eligible? Certain electronics such as televisions, computer monitors, printers, laptops, DVD players, stereos, and video game consoles. NO hazardous materials or liquids (i.e., flammable liquids, oil, paint, fertilizer, chemical cleaners, etc.). NO tires. NO concrete or masonry demolition (driveway concrete, wall blocks or gravel). NO dirt or sod. NO ammunition.

Tree Branch/Compost Drop-off Day

Dates:  Saturday, June 10

Time:   8 a.m. - noon

Location:  Thornton's Infrastructure Maintenance Center (IMC)  12450 Washington Street Thornton, CO  80241  Use the north entrance, with access from 126th Avenue, east of Washington Street.

Guidelines:  Thornton residents may bring their branches, limbs, and compostable material to the IMC.  Proof of residency is required.  Residents are responsible for unloading branches and all compost material.  Any compost material placed in bags must be opened on site other than 3 gallon compostable kitchen bags.  NO commercial or landscaping companies.

Thornton Landfill Days

Dates:  Saturday, June 17

Time:  7 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Location:  Republic Services Tower Landfill  19260 E. 88th Ave., Commerce City, CO  80022

Guidelines:  Thornton residents may bring items/debris to the Republic Services Tower Landfill that they may not be able to dispose of through their regular trash service.  One load per household.  Mattresses and box springs are subject to a fee of $34 each.  Proof of residency is required.  Non-hazardous debris only.  Pickup, cars, and small single-axle trailer loads only (less than 5 yards).  All loads must be covered.  Commercial loads are subject to applicable fees.  No liquids, electronics, tires, car batteries, medical waste, ammunition, fireworks, or fluorescent bulbs will be accepted.  Safety vests must be worn at all times and are available at the landfill for $3.

What can I bring to the IMC? 

The Infrastructure Maintenance Center (IMC) is located at 12450 Washington Street.  Thornton residents only (no commercial or landscaping companies) may bring or drop-off the following on weekdays during business hours:

  • Motor oil, antifreeze, and cooking oil - in sealed gallon (or smaller) containers
  • Appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, & water heaters
  • Compost material such as grass clippings, leaves, flowers, coffee grounds, food scraps.  Be prepared to open all bags on site. Only 3 gallon compostable kitchen bags will be accepted.

Please call 720-977-6200 ahead of your arrival for instructions or head to the north gate entrance with access from 126th Avenue, east of Washington Street.  Once at the gate, press the button for access into the yard and let the operator know you are there to drop off compost. 

***Access to the north gate from 126th Avenue is now restricted other than on event days.***

2023 Holiday Delay Schedule

Trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day on the following holidays:

  • Memorial Day, May 29
  • Independence  Day, July 4
  • Labor Day, September 4
  • Thanksgiving Day, November 23
  • Christmas Day, December 25

Solid Waste Fee Structure 

The current fee for Thornton’s Solid Waste Collection Program is $13.50 per month, and will appear on your water bill. The $13.50 per month charge includes a weekly collection of solid waste and every-other-week collection of recycling materials. This service is limited to ONE black container for solid waste. There is an additional charge for each additional black container with a maximum of four containers. However, green containers filled with trash will not be emptied.

  • One black container - $13.50
  • Two black containers - $16.00
  • Three black containers - $25.20
  • Four black containers - $34.40
