​The Environmental Services Team provides curbside trash and recycling collection services to over 30,000 homes in the City, as well as a number of other collection services for our citizens. The collection service program is operated as an enterprise fund, meaning that all costs associated with providing the various services are covered by user fees.

Thornton residents can use this service to get rid of clutter in the garage or basement, plan a do-it-yourself room remodel, clean up the yard or storage shed, get rid of recently replaced furniture or appliances, or for a rental property cleanup! This service is available by appointment only.  

The minimum fee is just $65 per collection for up to 6 cubic yards of stuff, which would approximately fill two standard pickup truck beds. The cost of service is placed on the next utility bill for payment. Got more junk? More than two full pickup loads = $109 or more.  

What is eligible?  Furniture, appliances, mattresses/box springs, hot water heaters, fence panels, branches, remodeling debris, yard waste, etc.

What is NOT eligible? Certain electronics such as televisions, computer monitors, printers, laptops, DVD players, stereos, and video game consoles. NO hazardous materials or liquids (i.e., flammable liquids, oil, paint, fertilizer, chemical cleaners, etc.). NO tires. NO concrete or masonry demolition (driveway concrete, wall blocks or gravel). NO dirt or sod. NO ammunition.

Electronic Waste Recycling Drop-off

Event dates:  August 22

Event times:  9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Location:  Thornton's Infrastructure Maintenance Center (IMC) 12450 Washington Street.  Use the north entrance with access on 126th Avenue east of Washington Street.

Guidelines:  Adams County and the city of Thornton invite residents to bring their electronic waste (computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones, televisions, computer monitors, hard drives, DVD players, scanners, printers, radios, etc.) to Thornton's  Infrastructure Maintenance Center on Saturday, August 22, 2020 for a recycling event. Items will be recycled safely and responsibly to ensure a high level of data destruction for desktops, laptops, and other data containing equipment. There will be a $15 per vehicle fee for items dropped off, including all electronics and one TV/CRT monitor. Vehicles with up to three TVs/CRT monitors will be charged $25. Cash and credit card will be accepted.

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL RESIDENTS OF ADAMS COUNTY ONLY.  NOT ACCEPTED: TVs AND MONITORS WITH EXPOSED TUBES. ANYTHING THAT CONTAINS FREON OR OTHER CHEMICALS.

Adams County and city of Thornton are pleased to partner with Techno Rescue for recycling services on this event.  For specific questions on certain electronics and data destruction, please call Techno Rescue directly at 303-482-2207.

Tree Branch/Limb & Composting Drop-off

Event dates:   Saturday, September 12

Event times:  8 a.m. - Noon 

Location:  Thornton's Infrastructure Maintenance Center (IMC) 12450 Washington Street.  Use the north entrance with access on 126th Avenue east of Washington Street.

Guidelines:  On specified dates, Thornton residents may bring tree branches, limbs, and compostable material to the Infrastructure Maintenance Center (IMC) 12450 Washington Street.  Proof of residency is required.  Residents will be responsible for unloading their branches and all compost material.  Compost material must be placed in BPI certified fully compostable bags, paper sacks, or be prepared to open other types of bags and empty on site. Residents must follow social distancing guidelines, staying at least six feet away from City employees and others at all times.

What can I bring to the IMC? 

The Infrastructure Maintenance Center (IMC) is located at 12450 Washington Street.  Thornton residents only may bring or drop-off the following on weekdays during business hours:

  • Motor oil, antifreeze, and cooking oil - in sealed gallon (or smaller) containers
  • Appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, & water heaters
  • Compost material such as grass clippings, leaves, flowers, coffee grounds, food scraps in fully compostable BPI certified bags or paper bags.  Be prepared to open all other bags on site.

Need an additional black trash container?

If you have one black trash container and would like a second black container, your trash service fee increases by only $2.50 per month.  Please email environmentalservices@ThorntonCo.gov with your home address and ADDITIONAL TRASH CONTAINER in the subject line.  One will be delivered to your home within one to two business days!


Due to manufacturer delays, we may be unable to deliver additional containers beyond basic set up of one black and one green can until late August.  We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

2020 Holiday Delay Schedule

Trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day on the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day, January 1
  • Memorial Day, May 25
  • Labor Day, September 7
  • Thanksgiving Day, November 26
  • Christmas Day, December 25

Solid Waste Fee Structure 

The current fee for Thornton’s Solid Waste Collection Program is $13.50 per month, and will appear on your water bill. The $13.50 per month charge includes a weekly collection of solid waste and every-other-week collection of recycling materials. This service is limited to ONE black container for solid waste. There is an additional charge for each additional black container with a maximum of four containers. However, green containers filled with trash will not be emptied.

Rates for the Solid Waste Collection Service as of January 1, 2003.

  • One black container - $13.50
  • Two black containers - $16.00
  • Three black containers - $25.20
  • Four black containers - $34.40
